Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling a bit edgy about the Joel Matip transfer speculation after reading reports that suggest that his parent club have offered to double his wages to persuade him to stay put.
The Express, citing reports from Sport1, state Schalke have offered the young defender a new deal which includes a hefty rise in his salary as speculation strongly suggested he was likely to move to Premier League side Liverpool.
Matip’s contract expires at the end of the season and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is keen to secure the 24-year-olds services on a free transfer.
However, Schalke are not about to let the highly-rated defender go without a fight and are willing to negotiate incredibly beneficial terms with Matip’s agent in an attempt to keep him in the Bundesliga.
The Cameroonian club has made 241 appearances for his club in the past six years and has been ever-present throughout the current campaign.
Klopp will be hoping that Matip’s mind is already strongly set on a Premier League move in the not-so-distant future and a new contract won’t be enough to keep him from his move to England.
