The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed by Dejan Lovren’s improvement since Virgil Van Dijk arrived at the club, but they believe further quality is needed at centre-back in order to challenge Manchester City for the title next season.
Virgil Van Dijk has dramatically improved Liverpool’s defence since he arrived at the club, and his ability to lead by example and install solidity into the back-four has dramatically improved Lovren’s popularity amongst the Liverpool supporters. The Croatia international was guilty of making fundamental errors on a regular basis during the first-half of the season, but they have mostly been eradicated from his game since Van Dijk signed for Liverpool.
However, now that the Reds faithful have seen their side defeat Man City in the Champions League, they believe they can go toe-to-toe with the recently crowned champions next season. If Liverpool are to achieve that aim they will need to make a handful of key additions to their squad this summer, and replacing Lovren with a quality centre-back is certainly a ruthless decision that Klopp will need to make, despite his improvement since the turn of the year.
With that being said, Liverpool should turn their attention towards Toby Alderweireld as according to the Daily Mirror, Tottenham are willing to allow the Belgian defender to depart in the transfer window as part of a major squad overhaul. If those reports prove to be true, the Reds would be foolish not to do everything in their power to secure his signature.
Alderweireld (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt) has spent the majority of the current campaign on the sideline, but his commanding performances at the heart of Tottenham’s defence in the past have rightly earned him a reputation as one of the best defenders on the continent. Not only is he defensively intelligent, a tremendous athlete and vastly experienced in the Premier League, but he is technically gifted and composed in possession.
In short, Alderweireld is the complete defender and a perfect candidate to add the finishing touch to Liverpool’s defence next season. Whether Spurs will be willing to sell to a fellow Premier League rival remains to be seen, but Daniel Levy is a pragmatic negotiator so a potential deal should be on the cards this summer.
