Liverpool’s defensive trio have been outstanding with Van Dijk

We’re only four games into the season but Liverpool are fulfilling the pre-season hype and look set to be legitimate title contenders.

Klopp’s men were made to struggle at the weekend against a superb Leicester City side but still managed to pull out a win to continue their superb start to the Premier League season. Liverpool currently sit top of the league having scored nine goals and only conceding one.

At the back, Liverpool look to have massively improved, which we can attribute in part to Virgil Van Dijk – signed in January – and new shot-stopper, Alisson. While Liverpool spent massively on the two players, Andrew Robertson, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold have proven that some of the club’s best signings haven’t required much more money.

The three players cost less than £15 million; Gomez for £4.41 million, Robertson for £8.1 million, while Trent Alexander-Arnold was a product of the youth academy.

While not many would’ve believed it when he joined the club, Roberston has fitted into Klopp’s high-tempo style of play. The Scottish full-back has been superb since he joined and has been made the captain of Scotland as a result.

On the other side, Alexander-Arnold has been equally as good and despite being 19, the youngster has managed to keep Nathaniel Clyne out of the team. In the middle of the defence, Gomez has made a strong start to the season and looks an ideal partner for Van Dijk.

Despite the big deals for Van Dijk and Alisson, Liverpool’s remaining defensive trio have been just as good and have been relative cheap.
