The year 2014 has been a strange one to be a Liverpool fan.

Brendan Rodgers side have gone from the sublime to the terrible in little less than six months, from challenging for the Premier League title after 11 consecutive victories, to mid-table mediocrity.

The Reds currently occupy eighth place in the Premier League table and head into 2015 five points adrift of the top four.

Whilst that is not a task that is beyond them, it is a far cry from where they were only last April - just seven points away from their first Premier League title.

Whilst it has been a rapid demise, 2014 should still be looked back on with some good memories for Liverpool supporters who were treated to some fantastic football and superb goals, particularly in the first half of the calendar year.

Here we have looked back on the Reds goals from 2014 and identified our top five.

Steven Gerrard vs FC Basel

Liverpool v FC Basel - UEFA Champions League Group Stage Matchday Six Group B

A goal which came on a night Liverpool supporters will ultimately want to forget, as it signalled their exit from the Champions League group stage.

But the free kick in which Steven Gerrard scored to level the scores that night was not only perfectly executed, it was also symbolic in the sense that it reminded everyone exactly what the Liverpool captain is still capable of.

Gerrard has come under fire for some below par performances this season but that stunning strike from a dead ball in front of the Kop at a time when the Reds were desperate for a goal, proved he is still very much Liverpool's main man - and perhaps the one player they can rely on to produce world class moments when they need them most.

Adam Lallana vs Swansea City

Liverpool v Swansea City - Barclays Premier League

A goal which came in the Reds' final match of 2014, Adam Lallana's second in the 4-1 win over Swansea City was not only a classy goal - it also gave Reds fans plenty of reasons to feel positive heading into the second half of the season.

Brendan Rodgers appears to have stumbled across a front three of Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling to get Liverpool's attacking threat back and all were involved in the goal which ultimately saw off Garry Monk's side at Anfield.

Coutinho's first time back heel was sublime, whilst the run of Raheem Sterling in that central striker position created a bit of room for Lallana.

The £25 million man dummied his way past two defenders before firing across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner in front of the Kop, to cap a superb night for him and a beautiful team goal.

It seems that not a game has gone by this season in which Luis Suarez has not been mentioned at Anfield and whilst you feel it may be in everyone's best interests connected with the Reds to let it go, there's no harm in looking back at one more special moment from the Uruguayan.

On this occasion however, the goal owed most of it's glory to Daniel Sturridge. The Reds' number 15 is said to be just a couple of weeks away from a return to action and the link up and intelligence he showed for this goal would certainly come in handy alongside the likes of Coutinho, Lallana and Raheem Sterling.

With the Reds leading 3-2 at Cardiff, Sturridge produced a genius back heel across the face of the goal where his strike partner was on hand to bury his second of the game and send the Reds on the way to a crucial 3-6 victory in the title race.

If ever a goal summed up the quality of Liverpool's 'SAS' strike force, than this was it.

Raheem Sterling vs Manchester City

Liverpool v Manchester City - Barclays Premier League

In what was perhaps the game of last season, Raheem Sterling's opening goal was pure class. Luis Suarez showed superb strength to hold off a challenge and deliver an inch perfect through pass.

Sterling's pace saw him in behind Vincent Kompany and the dummy and cool finish that followed defied belief it came from a player who was only 19-years-of-age.

That set the Reds on the way to a famous 3-2 victory, which at the time had everyone believing would lead to a first Premier League title.

In the game that followed, it was Sterling once again who got the Reds off to a flyer with another moment of magic. The winger dummied one player on the edge of the box before unleashing an unstoppable strike into the top corner from distance.

The celebration with Brendan Rodgers that followed was a moment in which Liverpool fans really believed the Premier League title was coming to Anfield.

And whilst we all know what happened next, the quality produced from young players the likes of Sterling over 2014, we can't help but leave Reds fans feeling positive for what the future might hold.
