Liverpool have enjoyed a brilliant season, and it’s been a particularly stunning one for Joe Gomez. The Englishman hasn’t had it easy at Anfield since he moved to the club, with a number of issues serving to halt his development, but he looks to be past the worst of his concerns.
Namely, he’s back in the team regularly, and though he’s not been injury free this season, for the most part, he has looked fit and well – up until the last few weeks at least.
Significantly, Liverpool appear to be very happy with him, too, as he’s agreed terms with the club over a new contract. The Reds evidently view him as a crucial part of their long-term plans, and with good reason.
Indeed, it’s no less than he deserves, as it’s been a truly remarkable campaign for Gomez. Whilst he’s had big years before, this is the first in which he’s truly looking like a superstar, and so it’s been a breakout domestic campaign for the 21-year-old – not to mention the role that he’s building in the England national team.
The Englishman has starred in the heart of the Liverpool defence. He’s been a regular under Klopp, and everything that he’s done – he’s done right. With a passing accuracy rate of nearly 90% in addition to constant contributions more defensively, Gomez has been a rock at the back for the Reds. Despite sitting alongside Virgil van Dijk – undeniably one of Europe’s best defenders – most of the time, if you weren’t already aware, it would be tough to work out who truly is the player that was signed for huge money.
It’s also the consistent nature of his performances that have left Liverpool fans impressed. It’s not like he’s come in and had a good performance here and there. He’s truly been one of their best players all season, and regardless of where he’s played, he’s constantly provided exactly what Liverpool lacked last season.
Furthermore, it’s remarkable to think that he’s just 21-years-old. He’s been around for a while, yet at such a young age, he’s already making waves in the Premier League. That speaks volumes about his potential, but arguably more so, it speaks volumes about how good he is right now.
Liverpool achieved great success by spending big on a top defender last year in Virgil van Dijk. They could have done the same thing in the summer and achieved just as much joy. However, they chose to rely on what they had in Joe Gomez, and it’s proven to be an incredibly shrewd decision.
Now, Gomez can look forward to turning out in a Liverpool shirt for many years to come. That’s great news for him, but it’s even better for Liverpool – because in the 21-year-old, they’ve found the perfect partner for van Dijk, and the perfect defender to lead them into a new era.
