Liverpool’s squad is full of talent and ability, and a number of players in Jurgen Klopp’s team have been the model of consistency. From Virgil van Dijk to Mohammed Salah, the manager can happily go into any game feeling confident that most, if not all, of his team will pout in a good performance.
However, nobody at Liverpool has been able to be so consistent for as long as James Milner. The Englishman, throughout his career, has continually put in great performance after great performance, and despite his age, he’s put in some of his best performances during his stint at Anfield.
Right now, Liverpool need him more than ever, and that’s why he’s simply got to start against West Ham on Monday. With Trent Alexander-Arnold injured, Jordan Henderson played the role in Liverpool’s last game, and he did little to suggest that he’s the best man for the job.
Indeed, now that Milner is back from suspension, there’s only one man that should be featuring on the right-hand side of the defence – and it’s the model of consistency James Milner himself.
Milner has played on both sides of the defence whilst at Liverpool, and he’s looked good. He kept Alberto Moreno out of the team for the best part of a year on the left, and if anything, he’s even more comfortable on the right.
His brilliant work rate means that he’s able to have an impact at both ends of the field, whilst his efficiency and quality when defending will ensure that Liverpool remain solid at the back.
Milner is exactly the sort of player that you want when the going gets tough, and with Alexander-Arnold still recovering, it’s hard to think of a better man to come in.
