Liverpool left it late to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup last night, scoring two goals in the final nine minutes – one of which was a 95th minute winner – to edge past Swansea City 2-1 at Anfield.
On a dramatic night, it was fringe players – the likes of Fabio Borini and Kolo Toure – who caught the eye whilst summer signings such as Lazar Markovic and Rickie Lambert continued to struggle.
It has been a difficult opening two months of the season for the Reds, who currently sit seventh in the Premier League and face a battle to qualify from their Champions League group with two defeats from their opening three matches.
Brendan Rodgers has openly admitted that he expects his side to take time to produce consistent form – the likes of which they did last season – with the Reds hit hard by the sale of Luis Suarez and the loss of Daniel Sturridge to injury.
The Reds are also trying to integrate nine new summer signings into their first team squad which has not proved an easy task up until this point.
