Recent developments at Anfield have brought a brand new sense of optimism for many of the Liverpool faithful as current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett seem to be on their way out, paving the way for fellow American and Boston Red Sox owner John Henry to take control of the Merseyside club.
After a rather disappointing start to their Premier League season, it is thought that new ownership will bring about extra funds for manager Roy Hodgson to invest in his side, hopefully enabling the club finish the season in a much better vain of former than they have started.
However, while many fans are looking forward to potential new arrivals in the January transfer window, which players would help to enhance an already star studded Liverpool squad and with the past success almost a distant memory, which of these touted players would be realistic additions?
While the club seemingly has strength in a lot of areas, they are left severely lacking in others, with a number of fans believing that a new striker, centre back and left back are crucial and should be Hodgson’s top priority in the next transfer window.
The real concern for many fans comes not in the current situation regarding their strike force, but their inability of the defence to keep a clean sheet. While defenders Martin Skrtel and Sotirios Kyrgiako’s have performed reasonably well for the Reds since their arrival at the club, a new centre back is seemingly what’s needed to give some new blood and confidence in to the defensive line up.
West Ham’s Matthew Upson could possibly prove to be the answer to Roy Hodgson’s prayers of a stable defensive line. The 31 year old has improved considerably as a player since his move to Upton Park and could be an ideal candidate to striker up a solid partnership with compatriot Jamie Carragher.
Although there has been no indication whether the Hammers would be willing to let him go, with only a few years left in his career, a move to such an illustrious club like Liverpool would no doubt be of keen interest to the former Arsenal man.
During the summer the Merseyside club were linked with a move for Sampdoria defender Reto Ziegler and despite failing during his first spell of Premier League football with Tottenham, the Swiss international has matured over the last few seasons into a strong and capable left back, making the 24 year old a possible candidate for a move to Anfield should the Red’s look to turn this speculation into something more realistic.
In regard to the on going speculation concerning the need for a new striker at the club, the answer could lie in another West Ham player, striker Carlton Cole. Despite failing with a bid towards the end of the summer transfer window, Hodgson could once again rekindle his interest in England international, who could be prised away from the East London club with a bid around the £10 million mark.
Cole’s potential addition to the squad would create a stronger attacking presence up front, giving star man Fernando Torres a reliable partner who would provide not only goals on a regular basis, but provide the strength needed to hold the ball up and give the Spaniard someone to play off as he looks to recapture his own form.
While these are only a few names of players would be willing to come to Liverpool and could seemingly enhance an already strong squad, with the troubles behind the scenes that have plagued the club in recent months seemingly on their way to being resolved, the club, its players and the fans can now concentrate on sorting out their Premier League results to ensure they finish the season closer to the top of the table rather than the bottom.
