Look at him now: Sebastien Squillaci and Arsenal - Arsenal

If you were to ask any Arsenal fan who in their opinion is the worst player in the current squad, you would get one common answer, Shkodran Mustafi.

The German defender has been a car crash of a signing since joining from Valencia in 2015 for a reported £35 million, putting many Arsenal fans into cardiac arrest with his numerous horror show performances and costing the team an inconceivable number of points in his three seasons in north London.

But, if you were to ask the same fans who is the worst Arsenal signing ever, they too will have a common answer, Sebastien Squillaci, a defender so bad that even he made the great and hilarious Mustafi look world-class.

Signed from Sevilla for a reported £4 million in 2010, Squillaci was a fairly exciting signing for the club upon his arrival. Consecutively good seasons in Spain, as well as regular appearances for the France national team, made fans optimistic that the centre-back was the missing piece the team had needed for some time.

It didn’t take fans long to realise they were hopelessly wrong.

Partnered alongside fellow French signing Laurent Koscielny at the start of the season, all hopes of a new centre-back partnership that could take the club into a new era quickly faded with poor performances from Squillaci.

His second season with Arsenal was just as bad, though. Squillaci was at fault for the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to Fulham when the defender gifted the ball to Bobby Zamora in the final minutes of the match to allow the striker to score the winning goal, while against Sunderland in the FA Cup he came on in the first-half and scored an own goal before being substituted off in the second half in a 2-0 loss.

His final appearance for the Gunners came in the following season in a 2-1 defeat against Olympiakos, a defeat that set Arsenal up with a Champions League round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich.

Squillaci was released by the club in the 2012/13 after just three years at Arsenal, where he made 39 appearances in total.

Although he left Arsenal as a joke, there is somewhat of a happy ending to Squillaci’s tale after his departure. The defender returned to his home country to play for SC Bastia where the veteran centre-back marshalled a defence that took the Ligue 1 minnows to top-half finishes in the table and to the Coupe de la Ligue final in 2015.

Arsenal fans might think Mustafi is an accident waiting to happen, but compared to Squillaci, the German looks like a superstar.
