According to our man at the Spanish sports daily, Real tabled an offer of €27 million last Wednesday to Liverpool for the defensive midfielder’s services but that bid has been reduced to €24m following the Anfield outfit’s refusal to respond.
Alonso, who got married this weekend, has already reportedly handed in a transfer request to Reds manager Rafael Benitez and despite Real’s refusal to meet the €47m asking price, looks set to move to the Spanish capital.
Los Blancos manager Manuel Pellegrini spoke this weekend about capturing the 27-year-old but admitted that alternatives were also on their hit-list should Alonso fail to move to the Bernabeu.
“It’s not a mystery that Real Madrid are interested in signing him but it won’t be easy,” he said.
“We are looking at alternatives for some positions. The attack is complete and perhaps a central midfielder or full-back is still missing but the rest of the positions are covered.”
Should Alonso leave Anfield, Benitez is expected to swoop for Udinese playmaker Gaetano D’Agostino, another Real target, as his replacement.
So what sort of beverage and just how many fuelled this? Have Real really made a reduced offer to prise Alonso away from Merseyside? Should this rumour Fly or Die?
