Losing £25.2m-rated man could cause Chelsea to fall down the table next season – agreed?

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern had high expectations for David Luiz this season. He was impressive last term, and he appeared to have finally come of age as a defender.

However, a mix of form and fitness problems led his season to a premature end, and that was disappointing to see.

Now, it appears as though the Blues are open to the prospect of him leaving, with the Telegraph reporting that he could be used to help tempt Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri to Stamford Bridge, or that Chelsea would be tempted to sell him if a buyer emerges.

Granted, given his lack of action this season, losing David Luiz – who is rated at £25.2 million by Transfer Markt – may not seem like a bad thing, but our landlord thinks that it would be a huge mistake from the club – and one that could see them fall even further down the table.

After all, it’s easy to forget, but the Brazilian was arguably Chelsea’s best player during their triumphant title win in the 2016-2017 season. A rock at the back, he formed a brilliant partnership with the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill, and that was pivotal to Chelsea’s success.

Able to play in midfield and defence, he has turned into a reliable hand for the club, and though injuries have taken their toll, the Brazilian is still one of the best on his day.

You also have to point towards his influence off the field, too. The Brazilian has been a real leader for the club, and given the players that Chelsea have lost in recent years – John Terry and Petr Cech to name but two – he’s one of the last remaining members of the Chelsea old guard. Sure, he left for a few years between stints, but his leadership and charisma are vital – and there’s nobody else like him at Chelsea.

Losing him, then, would be a big blow – and so Chelsea must be smart about this one. Even if they simply choose to sell him to another club in a deal not involving a potential new manager, you can’t simply buy a player that brings what he brings to the table very easily.
