Lovren pursuit doesn’t mean Liverpool star will make way

Daniel Agger

There is good news for Liverpool fans in the Football Transfer Tavern with theĀ Daily Star reporting that Brendan Rodgers wants to keep vice captain Daniel Agger at the club despite his interest in Southampton defender Dejan Lovren.

Agger has been consistently linked with a move away from Liverpool after struggling to hold down a regular first team place in Rodgers’ side last season.

The Dane admitted at the end of the season that he does not want to continue as a third choice centre back, whilst the potential arrival of Lovren may see him fall further down the pecking order.

But Rodgers was keen to stress that the 29-year-old remains a key part of his plans, following the Reds’ pre-season defeat to Brondby.

“Agger is one of the best players we have. He has been unlucky because he has been plagued by injuries last season,” Rodgers said.

“He is a good player, he is experienced and we can use that in the upcoming season.

“Daniel has signed a contract with us [which expires in June 2016] and he showed in the first half, what an excellent player he is,” he added.

Agger has previously attracted attention from Barcelona, but has always stated he would remain at Liverpool for as long as the club want him.
