AC Milan have reportedly won the race for Brazilian starlet – Lucas Paqueta.
Milan’s sporting director Leonardo has confirmed that the Italian club have reached an agreement with Flamengo to sign Paqueta when the January transfer window opens. According to reports, the 21-year-old has already completed a medical at the San Siro and will cost the club around £30m. AC Milan are believed to have beaten the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool to his signature.
Reports during the summer suggested that Liverpool were interested in bringing the youngster to Merseyside. Jurgen Klopp was interested in bringing a creative midfielder to the club and saw a move for Nabil Fekir collapse. A move for Paqueta failed to materialise, and now Liverpool will be unable to revive their interest in January.
Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian could have been the perfect alternative for Fekir and a long-term replacement for Adam Lallana. Paqueta has scored nine goals and registered two assists so far this season and would have flourished in Klopp’s system. The youngster is known for his excellent work-rate meaning the German’s gegenpressing philosophy would have suited him to a tee. With silky dribbling skills and an eye for a pass, he could have been the creative midfielder that Liverpool have been sorely lacking during the season so far.
His performances have not gone unnoticed with Paqueta making his debut for the senior Brazilian national team back in September. Only time will tell whether the 21-year-old will become a success after moving to Europe – Liverpool may regret not beating Milan to his signature in January.
