Maddison blow might be a blessing in disguise if Southampton land £13.5m-rated dynamo

Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are still awaiting the club’s first move in the transfer window and are starting to get anxious.

The Saints are yet to sign a player this summer following a dismal 2017/18 season where they narrowly avoided relegation. Mark Hughes was a known admirer of Norwich City’s James Maddison, and Southampton had a £20m bid accepted for the youngster. However, Maddison chose instead to sign for Premier League rivals Leicester.

Losing out on Maddison will be a huge blow to Hughes’ plans. An attacking midfielder is needed to inject some much-needed creativity into the centre of the park. Southampton must now assess their options and line up another signing.

The man who could solve their problems is RB Salzburg man – Amadou Haidara. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old has enjoyed a stellar season in Austria. He helped his side lift the Bundesliga title, making 31 appearances, scoring three and creating eight. The youngster was also instrumental in Salzburg’s European campaign where they reached the semi-final of the Europa League.

Haidara is the latest talent to have developed at the Austrian club with the likes of Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Dayot Upamecano emerging from the club in recent years. Despite signing a new contract last week, Salzburg will struggle to turn down a big offer for his services.

A midfield partnership of Mario Lemina and Haidara will have Saints fans licking their lips.
