Gianfranco Zola is a player that won’t ever be forgotten at Stamford Bridge, and he’s undoubtedly a legend amongst the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern.
Known for his technique, goalscoring ability and his incredible quality with the ball at his feet, the Italian is one of the greatest to ever pull on a blue shirt.
A player of his quality is always difficult to replace, and whilst the Blues have tried their best to do that over the last decade since he left, the squad at present is void of a player like him. Fortunately, Chelsea would certainly get visions of the Italian strutting his stuff if they were to land Spanish ace Luis Alberto, who is rated at £19.8 million by Transfer Markt.
Alberto, like Zola, is best used as a number 10, allowing him to sit behind a forward and pull the strings. He would be able to make use of his fantastic technical ability, most notably his passing, and thus allow Chelsea to move forward in an offensive manner. With solid pace and dribbling, he’d also be able to make magic out of very little – not to mention his goalscoring record isn’t too shabby either.
His stats over the last season certainly go a long way to indicating how efficient he would be in a Zola-like role. His fantastic passing is exemplified by the stellar 16 league assists that he picked up last term, whilst the 11 goals that he bagged bring his total goal involvement to a whopping 27 in just 34 games.
Of course, Alberto would have the luxury of performing alongside the likes of Eden Hazard and Willian, and so he won’t be relied on quite as heavily as Zola – and that will undoubtedly make things easier for him.
It’s impossible to replace Chelsea’s little Italian icon, but in Alberto, the Blues may finally have their heir-apparent.
