Newcastle United supporters are somewhat downbeat in the Transfer Tavern today after seeing their side fall to a 1-0 defeat against Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday, in turn suffering their fourth Premier League loss of the campaign.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Clarets having won four of their nine league matches, and would have known that victory in Lancashire on Monday night would have taken them above Liverpool into fifth place in the table. However, it wasn’t to be as Jeff Hendrick scored the all important winner 16 minutes from time to secure a fourth league victory of the season for Sean Dyche’s men, which saw them move above the Magpies in the division into seventh place, while Benitez’s side remain ninth.
Thus, our resident Newcastle fans are reasonably frustrated and disappointed given their side’s lacklustre display at Turf Moor, and they are unlikely to feel any better if a recent report from Haberturk (via talkSPORT) is anything to go by.
And that’s because they outline some interesting developments regarding the chase for Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, a reported target of the Magpies.
The 26-year-old moved to the Turkish giants back in 2014 and has since then scored 58 goals in just 131 games for the club, with 20 coming last season to help them to a second successive Super Lig title.
And with eight goals in 13 matches already this term, three of which coming in the Champions League, the Turkey international doesn’t appear to be letting up, and as such he has reportedly attracted the interest of Benitez’s Newcastle.
However, the Magpies look to have suffered a huge blow in pursuit of the striking sensation, as reports suggest that Premier League duo Everton and Tottenham have opened talks with the 26-year-old regarding a move to their respective sides in the January window.
Managerless Everton have scored just seven goals in the Premier League this season while Spurs have looked far from their lethal best when Harry Kane is not on the field, so it’s clear that moving for Tosun makes sense for both clubs and would certainly bolster their attacking ranks.
And Newcastle will now have to respond if they want to land the highly-rated forward in the winter window.
Landlord’s verdict: Cenk Tosun has certainly proven his worth to Besiktas in the last three years, with his 58 goals in 131 games helping them to two successive Turkish Super Lig titles, as well as top spot in their Champions League group this time round.
Thus, it’s hardly surprising that several Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on the 26-year-old, with Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United one side who have been repeatedly linked with the forward since the close of the transfer window.
Yet it appears that they have fallen behind in the race as both Everton and Tottenham have reportedly opened talks with Tosun’s representatives, which is news that is sure to come as major blow to Benitez and his January transfer plans.
The Spaniard was left frustrated over the summer given their inability to land top targets, and this doesn’t appear to be the start he wanted to his winter plans either.
