For the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern, a defensive rebuild is essential this summer…
The Sky Blues have impressed this year going forward, but defensively they have really struggled. John Stones has been poor at points, with the Englishman often showing his lack of experience, whilst Vincent Kompany has struggled for fitness over the last few seasons.
Add to that the recent exodus of defenders, notably Pablo Zabaleta and Gael Clichy, and it quickly becomes clear what a job Pep Guardiola has on his hands.
This is something that the Spaniard is looking to solve though, and according to Sky Sports correspondent Kaveh Solhekol, the Spaniard is closing in on his first defensive deal of the summer.
Solhekol is reporting that Man City are close to a £40m deal for left-back Benjamin Mendy, who has been in fine form for Monaco this season.

An offensive left-back, Mendy has been a standout player for Monaco this year, delivering consistent performances both domestically and continentally.
At just 22-years-old, he could be the long-term solution that Guardiola craves, and with Gael Clichy’s contract set to expire, he could be the perfect replacement.
