The winter transfer window swings open for business tomorrow and here in the Football Transfer Tavern we are excited to see who will be targeted in the market.
One Premier League side who were thought to be happy with their current squad are title favourites Manchester City. While both a new centre-back and goal-keeper have been rumoured, it was assumed that Pellegrini was content heading into the business end of the season.
But today’s The Metro suggests that Benfica’s midfielder Nemanja Matic has now caught the eye as Manuel Pellegrini reportedly looks to further strengthen his side in January.
The 25-year-old powerful Serbian international, who has been strongly linked with return to Chelsea in recent weeks, has emerged as a prime transfer target for the Citizens. Matic departed Stamford Bridge as part of the deal that brought David Luiz to Chelsea in January 2011 but has emerged as a fine midfield engine.
Speculation has increased after the Chilean admitted that he will look at adding to his team as he maintains their quest for silverware on four different fronts.
He said: ‘For the moment we are not talking about that [the transfer window]. But we are always analysing what we need and what we don’t need.
‘There is a possibility in the winter transfer window for every club. We will see what we are going to do in the next days.’
City were very busy during the summer signing Fernandinho, Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas, Stevan Jovetic, and Martin Demichelis as Pellegrini looked to overhaul Roberto Mancini’s overwhelming team. With no departures expected at the Etihad, it’s hard to see where any new signing will fit into Pellegrini’s mammoth squad.
