It’s been a great season so far for the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern. The Citizens have fired ahead in the Premier League, and after enjoying a prolific run of victories prior to their draw with Crystal Palace, it’s going to be a struggle for anyone to catch them in the English top flight this term.
That task is going to be made even more difficult if the Citizens are able to bring in any more top quality players in January, and if ESPN is to be believed, that could be on the cards. ESPN reports that Man City are ‘confident’ that a deal for Jonny Evans will be completed this January, with the Sky Blues keen to add some more quality at the back for the second-half of the campaign.
Quality in depth has been Man City’s strength this season, with top players able to come in and out of the side on a near-weekly basis. Pep Guardiola has been able to rotate much of his squad, allowing everyone to remain fresh and fit. However, he hasn’t had as much freedom at the back, with the likes of Vincent Kompany and John Stones suffering from injuries so far this term.
Evans, then, would provide some crucial depth, whilst his own personal experience will allow him to bring something new to the fold within the Man City dressing room. Though he’s currently playing for West Brom, his time at Man Ud saw him win a number of trophies, and that proves that a move to Man City won’t be too much for him.
In terms of his own personal qualities, he’s proven over the last few years that he is one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders. Offering leadership, composure, fantastic tackling and excellent positioning, Evans is a player that Guardiola would be able to bring in and have no doubts about his quality, and that’s just what he is looking for at present.
He won’t be cheap, but Man City’s confidence is sure to stand them in good stead – especially given their financial backing.
Evans would be a solid, if unspectacular signing for Man City. He’s never going to score goals quite like Sergio Aguero or produce incredible passes like John Stones at the back, but rarely does he make mistakes, and that’s what Guardiola will want.
He’s at a period in his career where a move back to Manchester makes a lot of sense for him, and though he may not be a regular starter, his role in the squad could be invaluable.
