The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are enjoying watching their side this season. With so much quality on display, the fans are convinced that their side couldn’t get any better, particularly given that the likes of Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus are all leading the line. Pep Guardiola, though, reportedly wants to add another major name to the team.
According to the Daily Mirror, Man City are keen on Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand, who has cemented his place as one of the Premier League’s most consistent left-backs in recent years. A move, however, is likely to only happen on the condition that the Saints are able to bring in a replacement – with a move for Man Utd reject Luke Shaw reportedly being considered.
It’s a move that would require a few pieces to fall into place, but it’s certainly one that makes sense for the Citizens. Given Benjamin Mendy’s injury, a new left-back is a vital acquisition in January, and Bertrand fits the bill. Very solid defensively, he’s also proficient going forward, and that will be key for Pep Guardiola this season.
He’ll potentially have to rely on Man Utd wanting to sell Shaw, of course, but there is a real sense of optimism in the Transfer Tavern. The fans in the pub think that he would be a perfect fit at the Etihad.
A move to Man City would undoubtedly be a big step up for Bertrand, but he’s certainly good enough.
Significantly, he’s also homegrown, which will be attractive to the Sky Blues.
Given that his style of play differs to Mendy, in that he is far more defensively focused, that could leave a space for him in the team after the Frenchman’s return, too.
