At the beginning of 2018 the Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern were discussing the prospect of winning four trophies this season, but with just a few weeks remaining in the season they look destined to finish with two pieces of silverware to show for their outstanding campaign.
Naturally, it’s difficult for the Citizens faithful to be disappointed with collecting two trophies in a single season. However, the level of dominance they have displayed since the beginning of the season did suggest that they were set to achieve something truly special.
That hasn’t proven to be the case, so Guardiola will have to establish where his side went wrong and use the summer transfer window as an opportunity to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season. And according to French media outlet L’Equipe, City are targeting a move for Jean-Michael Seri, although they face competition from Chelsea for his signature.
Seri is currently playing his trade in Ligue 1 for OGC Nice and the quality of his performances since signing from Pacos Ferreira in 2015 have caught the attention of plenty of Europe’s heavyweight clubs. The report also claims that he has a release clause of approximately £34.8 million written into his contract, which represents a bargain price in the current market.
The arrival of the Ivorian midfielder would give Guardiola a unique option in central-midfield and a chance to hand Fernandinho a rare opportunity to rest next season. City have become overly reliant on the immensely dependable Brazilian in recent years, so it’s about time they signed a player to support him in the demanding defensive midfield role which Guardiola deploys him in.
Seri would offer City a different dynamic in midfield, as he prefers to sit deep and dictate the tempo of proceedings and carefully pick his moments when moving forward. His excellent range of passing is an asset which would certainly match the philosophy which Guardiola is trying to implement, whilst his ability to read the game and position himself according is a fundamental skill of the role which he would presumably be expected to undertake at City.
City have failed in their quadruple bid for a multitude of different reasons this season, one of which has certainly been their over-reliance on Fernandinho in midfield. If the Citizens want to change that and mount a genuine challenge for the Champions League next season, then they should look no further than making a bid for Seri in the summer transfer window.
