It has been a fairly steady start in the Premier League for the Man City fans in the Football Transfer Tavern…
After an explosive start to the season, things have slowed down somewhat under Pep Guardiola – but morale amongst the Citizens in the Tavern is still high.
The ex-Barcelona chief has impressed with his tactical awareness and team selection so far this campaign – and in truth, our landlord thinks that Guardiola is getting the best out of a somewhat depleted side.
A few poor performances in recent weeks have identified several holes in the Man City side – and none are gaping more so than the one in Man City’s disappointing defence.
Poor performances from the likes of Stones and Otamendi, alongside the non-availability of Kompany – have proven that Guardiola has a lot of work to do at the back – and it would appear as though he has identified at least one new target.
As per the Daily Star, Man City are keen on Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk – as Guardiola looks to replace long-term City defender Vincent Kompany.
The Southampton defender has impressed for the Saints as of late, and the Daily Star are reporting that a bid of around £30 million will be the minimum that Southampton will be willing to consider.
With Man City struggling for defensive depth, this deal makes a lot of sense. Van Dijk has been one of Southampton’s most impressive players so far this season, and he is man-made for the Premier League. Furthermore, his experience in the Premier League will serve him well – and would likely help him to form an immediate connection with the likes of John Stones in the heart of the Man City defence.
The Citizens in the Football Transfer Tavern are loving the idea of this deal…
