Everton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern were hoping that their side would tie up a deal for Joe Hart before the August 31st transfer deadline – but that now appears unlikely.
The biggest story on the opening day of the Premier League season was not the return of English football – it was the surprising news that Pep Guardiola had dropped Joe Hart from Manchester City’s first-team.
Our landlord thought it could be coming, but nobody here in the Football Transfer Tavern expected Guardiola to drop Hart immediately – particularly without signing a new first choice goalkeeper.
Whilst a host of fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern would have been delighted if their club had signed Hart, Sky Sports have confirmed that two clubs were expected to battle it out for the 29-year old’s signature; Everton and Liverpool
In particular, they note that the £7 million cost for a one-year loan move is not an economically feasible option for the Toffees.
Whilst Joe Hart’s inconsistency in recent years has certainly reduced his stock, our landlord thinks that Everton – or any other club for that matter – would be making a huge mistake by not bringing the experienced goalkeeper in.
He doesn’t think you can judge Hart on a couple of mistakes that he made in just one season!
By looking at this table, courtesy of Whoscored.com – it looks like he might just be right…
We hate to prove our landlord right… But you can’t argue with stats.
Crucially, Joe Hart’s average rating last season was higher than it was during the 2013/14 season – when Manchester City won the league!
Even when he is out of form, Joe Hart has the stats of a Premier League winner; and he would be a coup for any side that can bag him – even if just for a season.
Everton fans – What do you think? Are you disappointed that Everton have dropped out of the running? Liverpool fans – Still keen? Manchester City fans – Still angry that he has been dropped?
