Man City hold interest in one of Europe’s best defenders, could potentially secure £53m bargain if they’re quick – report

The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern think that their side is close to perfect, though they recognise that a new defensive signing or two could be just what they need. Pep Guardiola’s men have been close to faultless so far this season, with no team able to defeat the former Barcelona manager’s men.

It appears as though Guardiola himself, though, still sees room for improvement, with Don Balon reporting that Man City and Man Utd both hold an interest in Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti. He reportedly has a release clause of €60 million (£53 million), and given how impressive he has been this year, there appears to be a sense of fear at the Nou Camp that his clause could be activated.

One of Europe’s best defenders, Umiti has shown class, guile and solidity at the back in Spain this term.

Contextually, there’s no doubting that a £53 move for Umtiti would be a bargain. Given that Virgil van Dijk was just sold for £75 million, that’s clearly the going rate for a top central defender, and there is no doubting that Umiti falls under that banner. Since moving to Barcelona, he has become simply sensational, and he’d no doubt be a good fit in the Premier League.

Still, a move won’t be easy, despite the release clause, with the Frenchman’s desires still unclear. What’s more, Don Balon fail to make any mention of a planned move, and so at this point, Man City’s interest is just that – interest.

It would certainly be a good move, though, and it’s exciting our resident Citizens.

Landlord’s Verdict

Umiti would be a great signing, and at this price, it’s almost a no-brainer.

Whether he would want to leave Spain, though, is a different matter entirely.

Either way, if they want to land him, both Manchester clubs will need to move quickly, as a new deal is likely to be in the offing for Umtiti.
