The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Jorginho in the coming weeks, but recent reports have given them reason to suggest Pep Guardiola is entertaining the idea of signing Miralem Pjanic as a plan b option.
According to the Italian media outlet Tuttosport, Man City have had a £50 million bid for Miralem Pjanic rejected by Juventus as their hunt for a new central midfield player continues. Reports earlier today claimed that City had made a second bid to secure the services of Jorginho, but the club have swiftly denied those reports according to Sky Sports.
It seems unclear as to which Serie A midfielder Pep Guardiola wants to sign this summer, but if the club want to reassert their dominance next season they would be wise to pursue their interest in Pjanic. Although the Bosnia international would certainly come at a higher price, it would be one well worth paying based on his incredible ball-playing ability and experience at the top level.
The 28-year-old midfielder (valued at £58.5 million by Transfermarkt) is a classy talent who possesses the ability to almost single-handedly dictate proceedings from the heart of midfield, and his statistics prove he has the end-product to match his tantalising build-up play. With 14 assists to boast from 44 appearances in all-competitions last season as well as 7 goals, Pjanic is a player who would add a significant layer of quality to City’s midfield and boost their chances of clinching the Champions League next season.
After winning back-to-back Serie A titles it’s likely that Pjanic could be tempted into a new challenge this summer, and if that proves to be the case then City have no reason to pursue Jorginho instead. Napoli’s deep-lying playmaker would certainly be a strong addition to the club, but it’s difficult to argue he would bring the same level of quality which Pjanic would install into the midfield.
A set piece-expert, an excellent reader of the game and an exquisite passer of the ball, Pjanic possesses all of the credentials to slot into City’s side and become an integral member of the first-team squad next season, so Guardiola should abandon his pursuit of Jorginho and instead turn his attention towards the exceptional Pjanic.
