The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling pretty good at the moment…
They’ve started the season very well indeed, and their Champions League campaign is going swimmingly too – having picked up another win on Tuesday night.
However, there is one major mark on their campaign, and it comes in the form of a major injury. Benjamin Mendy looks set to face a long spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee problem, leaving a number of disappointed faces in the Transfer Tavern.
He is, after all, a key player for the club, and he is not a figure that can be replaced easily.
It seems as though Pep Guardiola is, at least, going to try to replace him though, with Transfer Market Web reporting that the club are looking at potentially lining up a move for Portuguese defender Raphaël Guerreiro of Borussia Dortmund.
At 23-years-old, Guerreiro is the perfect option for the club, offering a long-term solution to Guardiola’s issues at the back.
He’s obviously no Benjamin Mendy, but there’s no defender quite like the dynamic Frenchman, so Guerreiro would be a decent choice. An excellent dribbler and passer, he’s also efficient defensively – which will be important for the team.
Any deal will be hard to secure, of course, but it appears as though Guardiola is considering his options if the worst should happen and Mendy is ruled out for a long time.
Man City have a lot of financial muscle, and so this is a deal that will likely be feasible – depending on how badly the Citizens want him.
The prospect of him playing the role of a backup after Mendy’s return might put the player off, but at the same time, the allure of Guardiola and Man City could be too much to turn down.
For the time being, though, Man City will be playing the waiting game. They need to find out the extent of Mendy’s injury, and then, somehow, make it to January without him if the news is bad.
