The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern were surprised when they heard reports of an impending new deal for midfielder Yaya Toure…
Clearly not a Guardiola-style player, the Ivorian had been widely expected in the pub to leave this summer, but news that he could be retained has certainly been received positively. In fact, our landlord thinks that a deal for Toure could become one of the most important of Man City’s summer.
It is no coincidence that news of contract talks between Toure and City have come off of the back of remarks made by Joe Hart suggesting that a Man City return is unlikely. Joe Hart has clearly been an important player in recent years, but Guardiola has deemed him not suitable in his new-look Man City team. On the field, he can be replaced, but off the field, he has a quality that has become very rare in the Man City squad – experience. Guardiola has built a very young, talented squad, but for the most part – he lacks the experience that comes not only with age, but also with an extended tenure at Man City. None of the new players know what it means to wear a Man City shirt yet, and this is where Toure comes in. Vincent Kompany is often unavailable, and Hart looks destined to leave – and so Guardiola is desperately lacking in experienced depth. Toure would provide that, and help to add a really important, experienced hand in the dressing room.
That is without considering his quality on the field too. The Ivorian hasn’t lost a beat despite his age, and this season he has continued to impress under the stringent pressure forced upon him by Pep Guardiola. He is different to anyone else in the Man City squad, offering powerful, dominant midfield play in an otherwise technical first team.
Let’s be honest, Toure isn’t going to be a regular, but on the field, he can do a job. However, as Man City’s experienced veterans begin to dwindle, his role is more important than ever.
