Chants of Blue Moon have been ringing around the Transfer Tavern today after Manchester City became Premier League champions following Manchester United’s defeat against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.
Our resident Citizens had been feeling downbeat in the tavern last week after they missed the chance to claim the title against United before crashing out of the Champions League against Liverpool following a 5-1 aggregate defeat. The pair of results served to temporarily tarnish what has been an outstanding season for the club, but their woes were quickly forgotten as a 3-1 victory over Tottenham combined with United’s shock home defeat ensured City of their second trophy of the season.
It’s been a near-perfect campaign for the club aside from their disappointing performance in Europe – a failure which will certainly give Guardiola plenty to think about ahead of the summer transfer window. After watching his side perform at such a devastatingly high level for the vast majority of the season, City’s defeat against Liverpool represented something of an anomalous result.
Guardiola’s task for the summer will certainly revolve around taking his squad to a level which will enable them to progress into the semi, or even the final of the Champions League next season. And with that being said, City should hijack Man United’s move to sign Isco in the summer to add a fresh dynamic to their threat in the final-third.
According to Don Balon, United are willing to use David De Gea as part of a swap deal for Isco (valued at £67.5 million by Transfermarkt) in the summer – a deal which would certainly disappoint the United supporters who hold their Spanish goalkeeper in such an immensely high regard. But if City want to achieve their ultimate ambition of joining Europe’s elite with a Champions League trophy next season, they should do everything they can to beat United to Isco’s signature.
The 25-year-old Spaniard would be an ideal long-term replacement for David Silva in the free-role of City’s midfield if Guardiola could successfully lure him away from Los Blancos, as he possesses the creative guile, rich experience and versatility to become a huge success at the Etihad Stadium.
Isco is one of the most consistently excellent attacking midfielders on the continent and, although City have plenty of options in midfield, his signing should be considered something of a necessity to take the club to the next level.
With three Champions League winners medals to his name already, Isco possesses a level of experience that would certainly give everybody at the club a huge boost heading into the new season, so Guardiola should go head-to-head with Jose Mourinho for his signature this summer.
