The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are seriously concerned about the state of their side’s defence. The Citizens have enjoyed a fantastic season so far, but their deficiencies at the back were exposed against Liverpool.
Though the likes of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi were not void of blame, many of their issues at the back can be put down to a lack of quality on the left. With Benjamin Mendy out injured for most of the season, and Fabian Delph also now out injured, the Citizens are now facing a bit of a crisis in the role.
This month, then, a move to improve the depth in the position makes sense, and our landlord thinks that Pep Guardiola would struggle to get much better than Ryan Bertrand, who is rated at £18 million by Transfer Markt.
One of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders, Bertrand has impressed for Southampton since moving from Chelsea. Offering a decent attacking threat, Bertrand’s main quality comes at the back, with the Englishman rarely beaten and always competitive – no matter who he is facing. That is important, as with the return of the Champions League on the horizon – which Bertrand would be able to play in this season – the Citizens are set to encounter some of Europe’s best attackers.
Despite playing for Southampton, he’s also pretty well versed at playing for a bigger club, owing to his time with Chelsea. He played for the Blues in the Champions League final, whilst he also played a few times in various other competitions. A move to man City would, undoubtedly, be a step up for him – but he’d relish the challenge.
He’d be the perfect January signing for Man City – agreed?
