The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Pep Guardiola can build a dynasty at the Etihad. It’s certainly going well so far, but the real task is still to come. Man City have, in part, an ageing squad. Guardiola’s done a good job at beginning the process of rebuilding, with a host of older players leaving over the summer, but more work is still to be done – particularly with regards to incoming players.
The prospect of signing Leon Goretzka, then, is an enticing one for the fans in the Transfer Tavern. According to the Mirror, Man City have joined the race for the midfielder, whose contract expires next summer, and whom current club Schalke are said to be open to selling in January.
A central midfielder by trade, he’s a versatile, technical and solid 22-year-old with both an eye for a pass and the stomach for a tackle, making him the perfect replacement for a player like Yaya Toure, who is also said to be set to depart at the end of the season.
Given his impending contract expiry, it seems as though a bidding war could ensue in January, and Man City have proven in recent years that more often than not, they come out on top in that scenario.
Still, a move won’t be easy to secure, but the prospect of this transfer is exciting the fans in the Transfer Tavern.
Within reason, money is no object for Man City, and so they’re in a good position with regards to this transfer. If not, then perhaps a Premier League title challenge could convince him to come for free next summer.
He’s an excellent tackler, he’s fantastic defensively and his work rate is enviable. He’d be a perfect fit in the middle of the park.
