Man City sealing £40m deal for 5’7 star would be better than Liverpool’s Fekir acquisition

The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing concerned by the progress of their rivals in the transfer market as Liverpool look set to wrap up their second deal of the window, but they could be set to top that particular deal if they make a shock bid for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.

Despite having already secured the signature of Naby Keita, Liverpool have moved quickly in the transfer window to lure Fabinho and now Fekir to Anfield in big-money deals. A report from the Liverpool Echo on Friday confirmed that Lyon’s captain is set to complete a £52.8 million deal after months of speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League.

Liverpool’s latest acquisition proves they mean business ahead of the new season, so Guardiola should be slightly concerned by their progress and secure a handful of his own signings in the coming weeks. Both Riyad Mahrez and Jorginho are widely-expected to move to the Etihad this summer in deals exceeding £50 million, but there is reason to suggest that they should also add Grealish to their list of targets.

Aston Villa’s financial crisis has provoked plenty of speculation regarding the 22-year-old’s future at the club and he is expected to be offloaded this summer in order to balance the books at Villa Park. A recent report from the Daily Telegraph claims that Villa are unwilling to sell their prize asset for anything less than £40 million, which is quite a bump considering his erratic tendencies both on and off the field of play in recent years.

However, on the evidence of Grealish’s development last season, £40 million would be a price worth paying. Surrounded by world class players and with Guardiola as his mentor, Grealish would be well-placed to realise the full extent of his enormous potential at the Etihad Stadium.

At just 22-years-old Grealish has plenty of room for improvement, and the fact he would help City to fulfil their quota of home-grown players will also increase the attractiveness of a potential deal. Although Fekir is undoubtedly the better of the two players at this moment in time, there is no guarantee that he will be able to replicate his fine form in France at his new club.

Grealish has earned a return to the Premier League during the past twelve months in which he has undergone a significant transformation mentally, physically and technically and, if Guardiola is willing to take a chance on the rising star, the Citizens will reap the long-term rewards in the seasons to come.
