Manchester rivals City and United are set to go head to head in the battle to sign Rochdale starlet, Luke Matheson.
The teenager shot himself into the headlines just last month when he scored for Rochdale at Old Trafford in the League Cup and has since attracted a number of admiring glances from onlooking Premier League clubs.
And now, according to the Daily Star, both Manchester clubs are looking to sign the youngster after his heroics with the League One outfit.
United, in particular, appear to be looking at bringing in young players to the squad as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to overhaul his team and add a youthful and hungry look to his squad.
Matheson would no doubt need a lot of development for either club but the report claims that both Solskjaer and City manager Pep Guardiola have been impressed with what they have seen and heard about him so far.
It is reported that Rochdale could demand up to £10m for the youngster, although that remains to be seen given the finances of the club.
What a dream story this would be for Matheson if he can complete a move to one of English football’s behemoths.
Aside from his goal, he has actually put in some very good displays for Rochdale. That moment at Old Trafford simply got him known to the mainstream media and wider footballing audience.
City don’t have the best record at blooding young players, while United are looking to go that way. Either way, it will be a big decision for the youngster and hopefully one that can bring some stability to Rochdale in a financial sense too.
