The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern desperately want their side to challenge Chelsea this season…
In truth, whilst Tottenham are currently ahead of them, if any side is going to come close to Antonio Conte’s side, it is going to be Guardiola’s Man City.
They have, undoubtedly, the best team in the Premier League personnel-wise, and so Pep Guardiola should really be pushing his side on to challenge at the top.
However, if this season is not to be theirs, next season simply must be – and Guardiola has a lot of work to do to ensure that his team is ready to win from the get-go.
There is certainly an argument to be had to suggest that Man City’s defence is holding the side back, with the likes of Otamendi, Stones and co simply not playing well enough this season. This is, seemingly, something that Guardiola wants to change.
According to the Sun, Man City are set to rival Chelsea in pursuit of Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson.
Middlesbrough’s defence has been on fire this year, with Gibson a key part of that, and he would certainly improve the defences of both sides.
Chelsea, who have already lost Branislav Ivanovic and look set to lose John Terry at the end of the season, certainly need depth – whilst a duo of Ben Gibson and John Stones would be particularly interesting to see at Man City. The Blues were last linked in January, though you would expect them to go back in for him this summer following the impending departure of Terry.
Gibson has made 27 appearances in the premier League this season, scoring once.
