Our resident Manchester City fans here in the Transfer Tavern will be buying quite a few rounds, after Sky Sports reported that the club are could be about to get their first piece of major transfer business this month, with a move for Julian Weigl.
Sky Sources suggest that City are currently preparing an imminent £19 million bid for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, as they look to strengthen their squad which has been hampered with injuries and inconsistency so far this season.
Whilst City are building for the future, with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho, Weigl could possibly also make an immediate impact in City’s midfield, with the 20-year old already having made 15 Bundesliga and four Europa League appearances for Dortmund this season.
Weigl has already represented Germany at under-21 level, whilst City’s expected new coach Pep Guardiola is rumoured to be an avid admirer of the 20-year old.
With current City powerhouse Yaya Toure expected to be out of favour under his former Barcelona boss Guardiola, rumour around the pool table is that Weigl would be acquired with the intention of moulding him to be the replacement for the Ivory Coast international.
Having been promoted through the ranks at another German side, 1860 Munich, Weigl joined Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund last summer for €2.5 million on a four-year deal.
Our landlord believes that the young German has the potential to be a great player at the Etihad Stadium for years to come, and with City’s transfer policy believed to incorporate a player’s personality as well as their on-field ability, Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel’s recent claim that Weigl is a ‘totally clear, cordial and open young man’ will make a potential deal all the more appealing to the Blues.
Manchester City fans, how big a signing could Weigl be in order to improve your squad for the future? Let us know in the comments below!
