The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern thoroughly enjoyed watching Chelsea’s demise whilst their side dominated with an imperious swagger at the top of the Premier League last season, and they are hoping that trend will continue in the years to come.
Meanwhile, the Blues faithful propping up our bar were devastated by their side’s failure to back up a title-winning season with another solid campaign. The club suffered a slow and steady demise which ultimately cost them a place in the Champions League, and the supporters are hoping some key changes will be made this summer to ensure they avoid a repeat next season.
According to reports in The Daily Mirror, Chelsea are front-runners to secure the services of Jean Michael-Seri this summer, although they face competition from Arsenal for his signature. However, considering Fernandinho turned 33-years-old this month, Pep Guardiola would be foolish not to rival Chelsea’s bid for one of the most talented defensive midfielders on the continent.
Unlike Fernandinho, Seri prefers to operate form deep in the midfield where he can dictate the tempo of proceedings with his extensive range of passing, rather than operate in a box-to-box midfield role. If City were to hijack Chelsea’s bid for Seri (valued at £31.5 million by transfermarkt), the Ivory Coast international would need to adapt his game to suit the demands of Guardiola’s intensive philosophy, but he possesses the engine from which to become a success as Fernandinho’s long-term replacement.
Man City will have their work cut out in trying to emulate their achievements from the most recent campaign when they return to action next season, but bringing Seri to the club would certainly represent a positive step towards another season of domination. There was a point when Chelsea were the financial superpower who were capable of flexing their muscles in the transfer market to sign whoever they pleased, however, City’s rise in recent years has shifted the dynamic, so they should take advantage of their position by going head-to-head with Chelsea for Seri’s signature.
If City wish to exert their superiority over Chelsea for another season, then they should do everything in their power to sign Seri and deprive the Pensioners of a fine addition to their midfield.
