The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly excited at the prospect of a defensive rebuild this summer…
According to reports, the Citizens are set on signing a number of defenders including both Kyle Walker and Dani Alves. Unsurprisingly, this has generated a lot of chatter in the Transfer Tavern, with many Man City fans questioning whether they really need two right-backs, and that is certainly a valid query. Of course, only one can ever play at a time, and it wouldn’t make sense to use up valuable resources just to accommodate both of them. However, in this instance, Guardiola is absolutely correct to look to secure a deal for the duo.
Dani Alves offers something that not many players within the Man City team can – experience. Over the last few years, Alves has done it all. He has won titles, he has won leagues, and he has been a real force in European football. Man City, at present, are a club looking to rebuild. Big, charismatic names like Pablo Zabaleta have moved on, and their value far exceeds what they bring on the pitch. If Guardiola is serious about winning big, he needs big players – and whilst Alves is no longer a spring chicken, he can certainly offer that.
That’s not to say he isn’t still a top player, either. The Brazilian is still at the top of his game, and whilst a spell at Juventus wasn’t perhaps his wisest move, he still showed glimpses of class throughout his tenure. There is no doubting that he would be able to push Kyle Walker for a starting berth at the Etihad, and given the trust that Guardiola has in him from their spell together at Barcelona, you can bet that he will play a key role should he move to Manchester.
