The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to reinvigorate the defence this summer, and many believe that Ryan Bertrand would be the perfect acquisition…
Rated at £12.75 million by TransferMarkt, Bertrand would certainly offer exactly what Man City need. At present, the Citizens are lacking at the back. The contracts of once important defenders like Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta expire this summer, whilst other players like Vincent Kompany have become increasingly unreliable in recent years. In that sense, then, the gaps in the Man City squad are clear.
For his part, Bertrand has really impressed over the last few years. Excelling on the left-hand side of the Southampton defence, Bertrand has certainly proven Chelsea wrong – with the Blues letting him leave for St Marys several years ago. Defensively solid and offensively efficient, the Englishman has really become a reliable hand for the Saints as of late. He might not bring the creative excitement of a Bernardo Silva or a Sergio Aguero, but he is reliable and solid – and players like that form the foundations of successful sides.
His homegrown status, as an English native, is also crucial for Man City as the club have recently invested pretty heavily in foreign talent. This all serves as a means of improving their side, of course, but that isn’t worth much if they aren’t able to compete due to a lack of homegrown talent.
Bertrand ticks all the boxes for Man City.
