For the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern, defensive reinforcements are an absolute priority…
Whilst the Citizens look likely to challenge for Premier League dominance this season, a few poor performances in the closing stages of 2016 have, at least temporarily, taken them out of the running – with both Chelsea and Liverpool impressing over the festive period.
Much of City’s poor form has been put down to their poor defensive work, with the likes of John Stones and Aleksandar Kolarov looking disappointing in an otherwise impressive team.
It came as no surprise, then, to learn that Guardiola was looking for solutions – with Bayern Munich defender Holger Badstuber reportedly on his way to the Etihad on a short-term loan deal.
Whilst not the sort of player that the Man City fans in the Tavern were after, many were still pleased – and they were expecting the deal to come sooner, rather than later.
However, it would appear as though Pep Guardiola and Man City have suffered a blow in their pursuit of the experienced defender, with German publication Bild reporting that Badstuber has instead agreed terms with Bundesliga outfit Schalke.
Whilst Bild note that a new contract and an agreement between the clubs still need to be sorted, it would appear as though Badstuber would prefer to stay in his native Germany – leaving Man City in the cold.
This news has disappointed the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern, with many fearing that Guardiola might not have a backup plan for this scenario. A couple of days ago the deal looked likely, but now that is no longer the case.
Our landlord thinks that City simply must find a solution, as their defence is, at present, simply not good enough to challenge for the title.
