For the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern, the need for defensive reinforcements at the Etihad is clear. Whilst Pep Guardiola’s side is filled with attacking quality, there is a sense that his options at the back are decidedly more limited.
With a couple of key injuries, notably to Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph, and the continued lack of general fitness had by Vincent Kompany, Guardiola has had a lot on his plate at the back this term.
Fortunately, according to the Sun, he has been handed a significant boost in this regard.
The Sun report that Man City target Jonny Evans could be allowed to leave the club this month, provided that a club matches their £23.5 million demands. Though Man City, it is said, are likely to try and cut that fee to around the £20 million mark, Evans is said to be potentially able to leave ‘within a week’, giving Guardiola a huge boost.
Though Arsenal are also apparently in the race, Man City’s current league position and funds could prove too much to pass up on for Evans – potentially giving them an edge in the hunt.
Though not exactly a European household name, Evans is exactly the sort of player that Man City need. Experienced, consistent, and a real leader, he would provide a lot to a defence that has looked out of sorts in recent weeks.
Our resident Citizens are feeling pretty delighted with this.
Man City fans aren’t likely to go out and buy new shirts with Evans’ name on the back. He’s not that sort of player. But he’s just what Pep Guardiola will be looking for.
He’s a no-frills defender, and given that the second-half of the season is to be a tough one for Man City, that’s what Guardiola needs.
They’ll have to beat out Arsenal, of course, but Pep Guardiola is clearly very keen on Evans, and so he’ll be hoping that his board can come through with a deal.
