Manchester United are expected to be busy this month, with boss Jose Mourinho looking to expand his options ahead of his side’s pursuit of FA Cup and Champions League glory.
The title race is all but over in England, with Manchester City storming away with what is set to be their third Premier League crown, and United fans here in The Transfer Tavern have accepted that their fierce city rivals have simply been the far better of the two sides this semester. Our landlord caught up with fans over a game of pool to talk all things United, and where the Lancashire lot felt their side needed to improve this month. Several positions were mentioned, with another striker as well as a winger and central midfielder mentioned, but talk focussed around whether another right-back was required as a successor to Antonio Valencia. Several world-class names were mentioned, before our landlord brought up the form of Porto’s Ricardo Pereira, rated at only €9m (roughly £7.5m) on Transfermarkt.
The defender has proven to be one of the most consistent players in the Iberian nation this season, with a series of scintillating performances at the back contributing to his side’s rise to the top of the Primeira Liga table. As well as scoring twice and assisting three times in the league, Pereira has also taken European football in his stride, with two Champions League assists helping Porto to the knockout stages. Also able to play in midfielder, Pereira appears to be Porto’s latest ‘Danilo’, with the Brazilian defender impressing at the club before moving on to Real Madrid, and then Manchester City.
United need reinforcements in this window and the next if they are to become title contenders once again in both domestic and European competition, and Mourinho should strongly consider raiding his former club for the player.
United fans, should a right-back be on Mourinho’s shopping list this month? Let us know!
