Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern had to check the date today after a truly remarkable story emerged from the world press.
Metro cite reports that Jose Mourinho has emerged as a surprise target for the Syrian Football Association, who want the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss to lead them to a historic venture to the 2018 World Cup.
Mourinho has been the favourite to succeed Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United ever since his dismissal from Chelsea in mid-December, although questions have been raised at the lack of progress the Red Devils have made.
The war-torn nation have reached the third stage of Asian World Cup qualifying and have a huge chance of making the next World Cup, which would be their first, and they detailed in a letter to Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes they want a big-name manager to lead them in their historic push.
“We would like you to know that we are open to negotiate with you the conditions required to sign Mourinho after both sides come to an agreement. It is important for football in this country, at this time, to sign a world class coach to help us reach the World Cup for the first time in our history.”
Our landlord believes that Manchester United don’t need to worry too much, as he can’t see Mourinho accepting this offer.
