Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern have been at each other’s throats today, as they’ve debated the latest piece of gossip to filter in from the continent.
Belgian outlet DH reports that the two Premier League are set to go toe-to-toe this summer for the signature of Napoli ace Dries Mertens, who is currently locked in negotiations with his side about a new deal.
The Naples outfit are determined to keep hold of Mertens, following a fantastic season that’s seen him net 21 Serie A goals in 29 appearances and find the net a further five goals in the Champions League, and are prepared to equal the £2.5m salary that the Premier League side’s are offering.
£21.25m-rated Dries Mertens current deal expires next summer and discussions with Napoli on an extension have hit rocks, with the Italian side keen to add a huge release-clause to the deal, whilst the Belgian’s entourage want the door to be left open for a lucrative move should the right opportunity materialise.
Our landlord isn’t sure exactly where Mertens would fit in at either Premier League side though, as Spurs have excelled with the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-Min this season, whilst United have an abundance of attacking talent.
Will Dries Mertens be a Premier League player next season? Let us know in the comments below!
