Manchester United fans were alarmed to hear that a club had made an approach for their goalkeeper but, thankfully for the fans in the Transfer Tavern, it wasn’t David De Gea and the player in question rejected the advance.
Nexogol state Manchester United’s second-choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero has rejected the chance to return to South America with River Plate, who wanted the Argentine World Cup finalist as a replacement for Marcelo Barovero.
29-year-old Romero has impressed in his inaugural season in England but his four Premier League appearances all came at the start of the season, when David De Gea was absent due to a dramatic collapse of a Deadline Day move to Real Madrid.
Upon the Spaniard’s return, Romero has found himself playing second-fiddle and although he has the chance of being first-choice next season, should De Gea leave, United continue to be linked to goalkeeping replacements- which means Romero may be fighting for his future.
However, Romero rejected the advancements of the famous Argentine club and instead made it clear that the only side he’d play for in his home nation was Racing Club, his boyhood side.
His loyalty to that club can certainly be respected, amid a period when it all seems lost in football.
United fans, should Romero be first-choice if De Gea leaves? Let us know in the comments below!
