Man United make decision on 26-year-old

The Manchester United fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern weren’t expecting Transfer Deadline Day to throw up this curveball…

He is yet to make an appearance for Manchester United yet this season, but Matteo Darmian is going nowhere this summer if the Daily Mail is to be believed…

According to the Mail, United have turned down an approach from Inter Milan for the Italian full-back  – despite the defender sitting third in line to United’s right back spot.

They do not specify if the approach was for a loan or a permanent move, nor do they suggest if a bid was actually made – but our landlord has pointed out that if United are flat out denying the approach; they must be keen to hold on to the defender.

The United faithful here in the Football Transfer Tavern had expected Darmian to leave the club this summer, having failed to make much of an impression under Jose Mourinho thus far – with rumours linking the club with a move for Monaco full-back Fabinho as a replacement.

Darmian can certainly consider himself unlucky not to be playing regularly at United this season, having impressed the United faithful here in the Tavern for the most part during his opening year in Manchester.

Signed by Louis Van Gaal last summer,  the 26-year-old played 28 league games for the club last season – and looked very good; particularly early on in the season.

Take a look at this compilation video if you had forgotten how good the Italian full-back was in his debut season…

Our landlord has argued that United have failed to adequately cover the right back spot for a number of years, and Darmian looked like the perfect man to fill in the gap last season – but under Mourinho his time in Manchester looks over.

Man United fans – what are your thoughts on this deal? Does he deserve another chance?
