The Manchester United fans have been celebrating in the Transfer Tavern this week after their side secured their place in the final of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, but they remain concerned about the prospect of losing Anthony Martial this summer.
The future of Anthony Martial has been in the spotlight of the British media in recent weeks due to both his lack of opportunity at the club and the fact his contract is set to expire in June 2019. The French international has made 41 appearances in all-competitions this season, but only 17 of his 31 Premier League appearances were made from the outset.
It also must be considered that Martial has often been forced into a right-wing role to accommodate the likes of Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez – a role which he clearly is not naturally suited to. With these points to consider, it seems perfectly plausible that Martial may opt to embark on a new challenge in the imminent future, much to the disappointment of the Red Devils propping up our bar.
If Martial does indeed decide to leave Old Trafford then Mourinho will need to replace him with a talent who has the potential to become a star in the Premier League, namely Ajax’s academy product Justin Kluivert (valued at £6.75 million by Transfermarkt). Justin, son of the Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert, is yet another talent with excellent potential to emerge from the prestigious Ajax academy.
Kluivert is completing his first full season with the senior squad, and so far he has managed to score 8 goals and provide 5 assists from 28 appearances in the Eredivise. The 18-year-old has been in fine form for the Dutch giants, and he was rewarded for his performances at club level with his first Holland cap in a friendly against Portugal last month.
Kluivert is predominantly a left-winger, but he also possesses the ability to play on the right side of midfield due to his rare ability to use both feet to equal effect. Kluivert’s versatility in midfield would enable Mourinho to hand him opportunities to impress on both sides of the pitch without compromising the quality of either his individual performance or the overall team performance which often suffers when Martial is playing on the right.
The United supporters will be hoping that Mourinho is able to convince Martial to remain at Old Trafford this summer, but if he is unable to achieve that aim then he would be wise to replace him with one of Europe’s most promising young talents before he gets snapped up by another heavyweight club.
