Man United must pip Liverpool to £22.5m-rated Spaniard to replace Juan Mata next summer

The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued by rumours which link Suso with a shock return to Liverpool, and many are beginning to question whether their club should rival The Reds’ bid for his services.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are monitoring the situation of AC Milan’s crown jewel Suso after it was revealed that he has a release clause of 40 million euros written into his contract. The 24-year-old midfielder has been in inspired form for the Rossoneri this season with 8 goals and 11 assists to note in all-competitions so far.

The young Spaniard (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt) has consistently proven to be a menace to his opponents in Serie A with his ability to drift inside from the right-wing and prise open defences with a combination of dazzling dribbling and incisive passing, so Liverpool’s interest hardly comes as a surprise despite the fact they allowed him to depart in 2015.

Regardless of Liverpool’s interest, Jose Mourinho would be wise to keep a close eye on Suso for the remainder of the season and rival The Reds for his signature. For all of United’s quality, they have been lacking a creative influence in midfield all season, but Suso’s arrival would help the club to rectify that glaring problem.

Whether United’s lack of attacking spark is a result of Mourinho’s shortcomings or due to the calibre of talent at the club is a separate debate to be had, but regardless of your standpoint, it seems clear that United need to bolster their options next summer to bridge the gulf in class between themselves and their local-rivals Manchester City.

Furthermore, Juan Mata’s contract will be a year away from expiring once the season reaches its conclusion, so United may need to sign a replacement for the soon to be 30-year-old if he can’t reach an agreement with the club regarding an extension.

Like Mata, Suso is naturally left-footed and normally opts to drift inside from the right-wing when attacking with the ball. On that basis alone it’s fair to say AC Milan’s prize possession represents something of a like for like replacement for Mata, so United should do everything they can to fend off interest from Liverpool and add a player of genuine quality to their ranks next summer.
