Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are surprised to hear they’re challenging a direct rival for a top signing and it’s a piece of news they’re welcoming with open arms.
The Daily Star states Manchester United are expressing an interest in Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci and will rival Chelsea for the player’s signature, with Antonio Conte wanting to unite with his compatriot at Stamford Bridge.
New Chelsea boss Conte has a strong relationship with Bonucci, who he’s worked with at Juventus and on the international stage, but Jose Mourinho is ready to shatter the transfer plans of his former employers by launching a bid of his own.
Mourinho has already splashed £30m to sign Eric Bailly from Villarreal but is now seeking an experienced defender to add to his back-line, with 29-year-old Bonucci presenting the ideal option for the Portuguese boss.
Interest could rise further though as it’s stated he’s also on Manchester City’s short-list but our landlord still thinks the Citizens will sign John Stones from Everton.
