Fans of Manchester United and Tottenham inside the Football Transfer Tavern are bracing themselves for a transfer battle with Inter Milan for Benfica star Nico Gaitan according to sources at talkSPORT.
The winger has been on United’s radar for over a year, and whilst Tottenham have also registered an interest – both are concerned Inter could swoop in and hijack the deal.
Benfica signed the Argentine international from Boca Juniors in 2010 as a like-for-like replacement for the Real Madrid bound Angel Di Maria, and now Gaitan is attracting similar attention himself from a host of Europe’s top clubs.
According to reports in Portugal, Inter have made the steadiest progress in the battle to secure his signature, and have talks with his representatives pencilled in for next week.
The San Siro-based club are looking to offer around £12 million for his services, and throw in winger Ricky Alvarez as a make-weight in the deal.
Any bid may spark a bidding war between Inter, United and Tottenham – who are desperate to add attacking talent to their squad for an assault on the Premier League title next season.
Mega rich Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala are also thought to be interested, and are watching developments closely, although it is thought Gaitan is not interested in a move to Russia.
