Man United up their interest in Frenchman

varane.jpgThere is more than a little bit of laughter here in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Daily Star claim that Manchester United could well be after ever impressive young Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

The centre back has established himself as the number one choice in a team that also boasts Pepe and Sergio Ramos and has managed to impress fans, management and media alike – no easy task in Spain.

Now boasting a back pocket that holds Lionel Messi, Didier Drogba and Robin van Persie, it is no wonder that Sir Alex Ferguson is looking at the player he feels he missed out on before Real Madrid swooped in for the French international.

Despite United being one of the biggest clubs in the world, they are not Real Madrid and the club will not allow the player to leave without a fight. Add to this the fact that Varane is settled and happy in Madrid with national compatriot Karim Benzema and with Zindeine Zidane set to return to the club in the summer, there really is no reason for him to leave.

Interestingly, the defender is swapping agents to Jorge Mendes who of course represents ‘team Mourinho’ and given this move, a more likely scenario seems that Varane would follow Mourinho to the new club of his choice.

Do United stand any chance of landing Varane or is this rumour a waste of column inches? Rate this rumour below.
