The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping Jose Mourinho will secure the signature of a quality right-winger this summer, and recent reports suggest he is planning on doing just that in the coming months.
Manchester United’s squad is overly saturated with attacking midfielders who prefer to operate from the left-wing, such as Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez, however, they have a distinct lack of options on the right side of midfield. Juan Mata has largely been handed the responsibility of playing on the right of an attacking midfield three this season, whilst Mourinho’s plethora of left-sided players have occasionally been deployed in that position to limited effect.
Jose Mourinho will have learned plenty about his squad this season, and one of the major takeaways will certainly concern United’s lack of balance in the final-third due to their distinct lack of options at right-wing.
Recent reports from The Manchester Evening News suggest Mourinho has identified that problem and will make every effort to resolve the issue this summer by bringing one of his former colleagues to the club, namely Chelsea’s Brazilian winger Willian.
The 29-year-old winger has been a bright spark within a relatively sobering campaign for the Blues this season, and the fact his club failed to qualify for the Champions League could convince him to swap Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford this summer.
Considering Chelsea and United are fierce Premier League rivals, it’s unlikely that Willian will command anything other than an extortionate fee – especially considering he has two years remaining on his current deal.
However, United will need to splash the cash in the transfer market once again this summer if they want to prevent Man City from strengthening their dominance in English football, so they must be prepared to pay up to £50 million for his services if they want to add a significant layer of quality to their midfield.
There is no doubt that United will need to add at least one right-winger to their squad this summer in order to resolve a nagging club problem and, considering the exceptional form Willian has demonstrated this season, they would be wise to make the two-time Premier League title winner their number one target.
